What is Biltong?
What is biltong exactly?
Biltong is an air-dried, cured meat snack that originated in South Africa. It's typically made from beef or venison (wild animal such as deer).
How is biltong made?
Quality beef is cut into strips and marinated in a mixture of vinegar and a mixture of authentic South African spices.
The marinated meat is then hung up to dry in a cool aerated space or in specialized biltong drying cabinets or boxes.
How do you eat biltong?
Once dried, you can eat biltong sticks as is, but larger biltong slabs usually need to be sliced into smaller bite-sized chunks using a sharp knife or biltong cutter.
Some people like to dip biltong into sauces like a cheesy garlic dip or guacamole. Sliced biltong is also often added to other dishes to enhance the flavor, for example, salads, potato bakes, quiches, or sandwiches.
